Journal Of Clinical Ethics

The Journal of Clinical Ethics (JCE) joined the University of Chicago Press journals program beginning in spring 2023 (vol. 34, no. 1). The double-blinded, peer-reviewed journal is now published on behalf of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics.

“The Journal of Clinical Ethics publishes scholarship of significance for clinicians’ practical patient encounters,” said editor in chief Edmund G. Howe, MD, JD. “By publishing the journal with the University of Chicago Press, we will expand access to, and distribution of, this vital forum. Ultimately, this should improve patient care.”

JCE is uniquely focused on ethical issues that arise in direct patient care, in the clinic and at the bedside, as well as with related issues and challenges in the broader practice of medicine, healthcare delivery, and best practices. It engages with issues of primary concern to physicians and patients—and families—and all members of the clinical team, including allied professionals in ethics consultation, as well as scholars and professionals in diverse disciplines and care-related practices: philosophy, law, theology, public and health policy, nursing, and organizational ethics.

“Partnering with the MacLean Center for Clinical Medial Ethics to publish The Journal of Clinical Ethics is an exciting opportunity for our Journals Division to serve healthcare practitioners and physician scholars,” said Journals Director Ashley Towne. "Our expertise in distribution, digital publishing, and marketing will help the journal reach an international audience while also improving access opportunities for its current readership. The field of clinical ethics continues to grow and JCE is poised to support and advance the discipline."

JCE continues to be published quarterly in print and electronic editions. Institutional subscription rates will be tiered to best serve the unique research needs of each organization. Institutional and individual subscriptions are available through the University of Chicago Press. The journal will be promoted at upcoming virtual and in-person exhibits, including the conferences of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, and the American Philosophical Association.
